Texas and the Threat From Within
“Shall we expect some transatlantic
military giant to step over the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the
armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth
(our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander,
could not by force take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue
Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of
danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst
us! It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be
its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time
or die by suicide.”
Abraham Lincoln,
1838
By Michael Bradley
Nations are entities afforded
life by the human beings that inhabit their borders, but it is through the laws,
mores and societal structures of each national population that countries are
imbued with personality. That is how, throughout history, it has been possible
for the informed peoples of the world to make generalized judgments about what
could be expected from other nation states.
Of course, just as well known
friends can sometimes, somehow have a dramatic change of personality and
beliefs, so can nations.
Oh My God! It’s a Gay Woman! Quick! Run! Hide The Children!
What is it about gay
women that seems terrifying to some people? The same people dislike, sometimes
even hate gay men, but they become nearly rabid when the subject is Lesbianism.
It seems clear that the fact gay women and men are ‘different’ than the
heterosexual majority isn’t enough to explain the fear-masking anger that arises
in some people when faced with homosexuality. The reaction seems all that much
more vitriolic when the gay person is female; why? Is it because women are so
vital to the continuation of humankind?
“Let Me See Your Papers,
Please!”
By William Finucane
In 1988, President
Ronald Reagan signed a bill apologizing to American Japanese for taking many of
them into custody and imprisoning them during the course of World War II. The
’88 legislation declared: Government actions in 1942 were triggered by "race
prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership."

GOP Outdoes Itself
With Open Hypocrisy
Perhaps the one overwhelming, defining
characteristic of the current, “modern” Republican Party is blatant, ‘in your
face’ hypocrisy.
Rush Limbaugh, who not too long
ago proudly proclaimed himself the real head of today’s GOP, long condemned drug
use in the most emphatic terms, calling for draconian punishment, then didn’t
even blink or retract one word when he was caught buying Oxycontin and other
drugs illegally and using them in great volume. When he emerged from a fancy
treatment center he went right back on the air and declared that with his very
presence the “truth” was once more being broadcast in America.
Global Warming? Where?
There is no such thing as ‘Global
Warming,’ says Pres. George Bush and his associates, but as seems to happen
frequently, difficult facts continue to emerge contradicting the self-serving
statements.
In determining the warmest winters since
the weather service began keeping track, there have been five record holding
years. One might think that those years cover a century or more and indicate
cyclical abnormalities. But that would be optimistic.
The five warmest winters on record are as
follows: 1991-1992, 1997-1998, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, and 2005-2006.
And the winner was 1999-2000, at an
average of 36.95 degrees.
It appears to us that the evidence is
clear; ‘Houston, we have a problem.’

The following stories are compiled from wire services and major newspapers,
as well as original information, and are provided here, in a shorter format, in
an effort to illustrate the broad spectrum of political activity that is taking
place today, and in the hope that by bringing together such relatively brief,
encapsulated accounts, the information will be both welcome to readers who are
usually pressed for time, while simultaneously being thought provoking. As
always, we welcome comments and observations relating to our stories, with no
regard to a defined point of view.

has for some time now individually dated all of its stories, commentaries and
editorials; however, some archived stories, particularly those that are older,
are not dated and this has proven confusing for some readers, given that the
current date is always displayed on our front page. We apologize for any such
confusion and would hope that the context of the earlier stories will help to
indicate the publishing dates.
